Four ambitious and beautiful young women. From four very different corners of Mexico. Just like hundreds of others, they are caught up in the frenzy that sweeps the nation when Alejandro Mateos, one of the country's most powerful producers, dreams up a nationwide talent search to cast the lead in his next big movie. Miguel Gila (1919-2001) was a Spanish actor and stand-up comedian, famous for his surreal phone conversations with imaginary people, and a skillful cartoonist; an idolized star, a king of laughter.

Hilario is a frustrated 40-year-old writer, trapped between nostalgia for classic literature and cynicism about the contemporary publishing world. While his novel is rejected by all Spanish publishers, he makes a living selling books at the bookstore La Ménsula and teaching an online writing workshop for older ladies, although his caustic attitude and disdain for sentimental stories only serve to alienate them.
